Interview with Queer Korean Artist Jun
His digital illustrations have drawn international attention.

Intro
Jun is a queer illustrator based in Seoul and Jeju Island. Working in clean lines and soft colors, his vibrant digital illustrations balance strength with intimacy. From album covers and event posters to book jackets and social campaigns, Jun’s illustrations have reached an international audience across Korea, Japan, and Poland.
I first discovered Jun’s work in 2022 through the Lush “Marriage For All Japan” (結婚の自由をすべての人に) campaign, in support of same-sex unions. Since then, I’ve been captivated by his gentle yet powerful depictions of queer life.
In this exclusive interview, Jun reflects on his creative journey, artistic process, and his recent exhibition exploring queer experiences within Korea’s military.

Danny: What is your background? Where did you grow up and where are you based now?
Jun: I grew up in Korea and I am now based in Seoul and Jeju Island.
You work digitally. How did you develop your style?
As part of the digital generation, I was exposed to digital methods from a very young age, and it naturally became my primary medium. I believe style encompasses not just form or mood, but also attitude. This stems from my perspective, research, and the way I think.
What’s your creative process like, from concept to final work?
I usually begin with concept development, sketching, and then move on to detailed drawings. All of this is done digitally.
You’ve called art “meditation.” What does that mean to you?
When working, I often feel a sense of total immersion and I experience a similar feeling when viewing art. To me, it resembles meditation in the way it sharpens subtle sensations and expands perception in unfamiliar directions.
Congratulations on your recent solo exhibition! Can you tell me more about it? How did it come about? Do you have a specific theme?
Thank you. I’m excited to present an exhibition at Kockiri in Itaewon. This exhibition addresses the continued taboo surrounding queer experiences and memories within the military. It aims to reveal that even the most oppressive of environments — the military — is permeated with queer moments. By doing so, this counters the idea of the military as a bastion of heteronormativity.
How does your personal work compare to commercial projects?
The process itself isn’t particularly different. But, commercial projects must meet a client’s needs, so thorough discussion and sharing of the process is necessary.
When you’re not working, how do you spend your free time?
I try to focus on my daily life by cooking and cleaning.
What’s your favorite neighborhood or spot in Seoul?
In Seoul, the place I feel most at ease is Jongno. There are many gay bars there.
You also created a book cover for the Polish edition of Sang Young Park’s queer novel “Love in the Big City”. How did that collaboration happen? Do you approach international projects in a different way?
The publisher kindly reached out to me directly, and we exchanged ideas before starting the project. Since it was a story I already loved, I had no reason to turn it down. I work on international projects just like any other project.
Sexual minorities are often reduced to sexual expression in media, but your work feels different. Do you feel pressure to conform to Korea’s conservative culture, or to resist it?
I believe that highlighting the diverse, queer facets of LGBTQ+ lives can itself be a form of resistance. I hope to see more representations of LGBTQ+ people in the future.
I first discovered your work in 2022, through the Lush “Marriage For All Japan” (結婚の自由をすべての人に) campaign. Why did you choose to participate?
The representative approached me first and I was glad to participate in the “Marriage For All Japan” campaign, promoting marriage equality.
What are you working on now or what is your dream project?
I hope to hold another exhibition as soon as my research and preparations are complete.
What is bringing you joy lately, professionally or personally?
During my recent exhibition, I received a wealth of valuable feedback. I was especially happy to have the chance to interact directly with the audience.

Danny: 어떤 배경을 가지고 계신가요? 어디에서 자랐고 지금은 어디에 거주하고 계신가요?
Jun: 저는 한국에서 자랐고 서울과 제주도를 베이스로 활동하고 있습니다.
디지털 작업을 하시는데요, 어떻게 자신만의 스타일을 발전시키셨나요?
저는 디지털 세대이며 디지털 작업에 익숙합니다. 아주 어린 시절부터 디지털 작업방식을 접했으며, 자연스럽게 저의 주된 매체가 되었습니다. 스타일은 단순히 그림의 형태나 분위기 뿐만아니라 태도를 담고있기 때문에 바라보는 시선이나 서치하는 과정, 생각하는 방식에 기인하여 이루어졌다고 생각합니다.
컨셉 구상부터 최종 작품 제작까지 창작 과정은 어떠신가요?
주로 컨셉구상을 먼저 하고 스케치를 거친 뒤에 정교한 묘사를 합니다. 모든 과정은 디지털 방식으로 이루어집니다.
예술을 ”명상“이라고 부르셨는데, 이 말은 당신에게 어떤 의미인가요? 어디에서 영감을 얻으시나요?
작업을 할때 그 작업과 제가 온전히 마주보는 느낌을 종종 받곤 합니다. 혹은 예술작품을 감상할 때도 비슷한 느낌을 받습니다. 마치 미세한 감각에 집중하게 하고 익숙하지 않은 방향으로 감각을 확장시킨다는 점에서 명상과 비슷하다고 생각합니다.
곧 있을 개인전을 축하드립니다! 전시에 대해 더 자세히 말씀해 주시겠어요? 어떻게 기획하게 되셨나요? 특별한 주제가 있으신가요?
감사합니다. 이태원의 Kockiri라는 공간에서 그 동안 준비하던 전시를 하게 되었습니다. 이번 전시는 군대 내의 퀴어한 경험과 기억들이 여전히 금기시되는 것에 관해 다룹니다. 군대 속의 ‘퀴어들’에 대한 재현이 아니라, 군대라고 하는 가장 억압적으로 보이는 시공간조차 퀴어적 순간들과 틈새들이 스며들어 있음을 드러냄으로써 이성애 규범의 보루로써 군대의 불가능성을 이야기하고자 합니다.
개인 작업과 상업 프로젝트는 어떻게 비교되나요?
과정상 특별히 다른 점은 없습니다. 다만 상업 프로젝트의 경우 기본적으로 클라이언트의 요구에 맞게 작업하기 때문에 충분한 논의와 과정의 공유가 필요합니다.
작업 시간 외에는 어떻게 여가 시간을 보내시나요?
음식을 만들고 청소를 하며 일상에 집중하려고 합니다.
서울에서 가장 좋아하는 동네나 장소는 어디인가요?
서울에서 가장 마음이 편안한 장소는 종로입니다. 그곳에는 많은 게이바가 밀집해있습니다.
박상영 작가의 퀴어 소설 ”도시에서의 사랑“ 폴란드판 책 표지를 제작하기도 하셨죠. 어떻게 협업을 시작하게 되셨나요? 해외 프로젝트에 대한 접근 방식이 다른가요?
감사하게도 출판사의 담당자께서 직접 연락을 주셨고 아이디어를 주고 받으며 작업을 하게 되었습니다. 평소에 워낙 좋아하던 작품이었기때문에 거절 할 이유가 없었습니다. 해외 프로젝트의 경우도 여느 프로젝트와 다를 바 없이 작업합니다.
성소수자는 종종 미디어에서 성적 표현으로만 축소되곤 하지만, 당신의 작업은 다른 느낌을 줍니다. 한국의 보수적인 문화에 순응해야 한다는 압박감을 느끼시나요, 아니면 저항해야 한다는 압박감을 느끼시나요?
저는 성소수자들의 다양한(Queer) 면들을 드러내는 것이 일종의 저항이 될 수 있다고 믿는 편입니다. 앞으로 성소수자를 묘사하는 더 많은 표현들이 등장하기를 바랍니다.
저는 2022년 러쉬(Lush)의 ”결혼을 위한 모든 일본(Marriage For All Japan)“ 캠페인을 통해 당신의 작품을 처음 접했습니다. 참여하게 된 계기는 무엇인가요?
역시나 담당자께서 먼저 제안을 해주셨고, 모두를 위한 결혼을 알리는 취지의 Marriage For All Japan 캠페인에 동참할 수 있어서 기쁜 마음으로 참여할 수 있었습니다.
지금 하고 있는 일이나 꿈꾸는 프로젝트는 무엇인가요?
서치와 준비가 끝나면 어서 다음 전시를 하고 싶습니다.
최근에 직업적으로든 개인적으로든 당신에게 기쁨을 주는 것은 무엇인가요?
최근 전시를 하면서 여러가지 소중한 피드백들을 많이 받았습니다. 직접 관객분들과 소통할 기회를 얻어서 기뻤습니다.
