Intro

Japan’s impressive art scene has a stellar exhibition schedule planned for 2024, but some stand out above the rest. Here are the top three shows I’m most excited for.

Frank Lloyd Wright and the World — Panasonic Shiodome Museum of Art, Tokyo

(January 11 - March 10)

2023 marked the centennial of Tokyo’s Imperial Hotel, the first international project by legendary American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. This show examines his early inspirations from Japan, design philosophy, and legacy.

Takashi Murakami Mononoke Kyoto — Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art, Kyoto

(February 3 - September 1)

In celebration of the institution’s 90th anniversary, the Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art will host the first major show by Takashi Murakami (村上 隆) in Japan’s old capital. The pop artist will present new works inspired by Kyoto, as well as his own interpretations of Edo Period masterpieces.

Keiichi Tanaami Retrospective — The National Art Center, Tokyo

(August 7 - November 11)

The National Art Center, Tokyo will stage the first-ever retrospective of leading pop artist Keiichi Tanaami (田名網 敬一). Rooted in his childhood trauma from World War II, Tanaami’s psychedelic collage has sparked collaboration with major brands like Adidas, Comme des Garçons, and Moncler.
