Fukui Ice Age

Japan’s Hokuriku region was hit by its first major snowstorm of the winter over the weekend. Fukui City recorded an impressive 49 centimeters (1.6 feet) of snowfall! Many train services were canceled, including the local Hapi-Line Fukui Railway as well as the Thunderbird and Shirasagi limited express trains.

Meanwhile, Fukui Station’s famous dinosaurs were transported back to the Ice Age. Remarkably, around 80% of Japan’s dinosaur fossils have been discovered in Fukui Prefecture, including six species.

Seeing the dinosaur statues blanketed in fresh white snow was a true delight. It’s the heaviest snowfall I can remember since moving to Fukui in 2021, and I was especially surprised to see the animatronic dinosaurs still moving in the freezing temperatures! Despite the cold, many locals were out and about, enjoying the winter scenery.

Please enjoy these photos of this beautiful winter moment!
